Wild Wanderings

Erin and I have begun discussing a long thru hike, the most likely at this point being The Pacific Crest Trail.  So, we rented the movie Wild with Reese Witherspoon, which we both really enjoyed.  We’re also discussing some other long hikes while we’re in South America as preparation.  I really want to hike the Torres Del Paine circuit in Chile.  The Torres were the first pictures of mountains I saw after I came back from Tasmania.  After living for a month without electricity in the forests of Tassie, I was having some major culture shock wandering a Denver mall with my brother.  Seeing a picture of Torres Del Paine relieved the culture shock a little, uplifting me with possibilities for future adventures and they looked in my eyes to be the most beautiful mountains in the world.

I’m hoping we can do some fairly long back packing trips while we’re in South America (100+ miles) and can move from that to a through hike.  Another hike I saw that looks very interesting is a trans-Panama crossing, so far done only by one person but is theoretically possible to anyone.  So many options, my feet get itchy in the spring, I just want to go somewhere, anywhere, explore the great out doors and never come home.  Has anyone out there through hiked a major trail and have any advice?

  1. Have you thought about the Appalachian Trail? My only advice is to wear comfortable shoes & bring along extra socks. *.*

    1. It’s another one we’ve talked about but at the moment The Pacific Crest Trail and The Great Divide Trail seem slightly more appealing. I’d love to do Appalachian as well. I wrote a list of long hikes I would like to do yesterday about a mile long.

      1. We don’t want to plan out too many details, but we do have some key points that we want to hit including Torres Del Paine, Machu Picchu, Galapagos islands, the Amazon river, Iguazu falls, the salt flats in Bolivia. We really just want to start in the south and find our way north however our travels take us
